The One Minute Devotion
(Jer 10:23-24 NLT) I know, LORD, that a
person's life is not his own. No one is able to plan his own
course. So correct me, LORD, but please be gentle. Do not
correct me in anger, for I would die.
I some times think it is the tendency of people to see themselves too
large and see God too small. That we see ourselves as the
"master's of our own destiny" and God as "He who sitteth
far away". But according to Jeremiah the converse is true.
We are not the master's of our own destiny and God is not only up close
and personal but sometimes He's in our face. Now I'm not saying we
don't have free will, but I am saying even those who see themselves as
"in control" really don't see and understand life in truth.
And as far as God correcting us... well this actually should be
something we understand the importance of by now and welcome His
discipline and correction. How can we know the truth if God
doesn't correct us? How can we know the way if God doesn't
correct us? Thus the one who thinks they know everything in
reality doesn't really understand much of anything (see 1 Corinthians
8:1).
May our prayer today be: "Father, help me to realize the only way
I'm going to find the way is to lean on You each and ever day. And
Father, help me to understand that You correct me because You love
me and because You don't want me walking down the path of
destruction." |

The One Minute Devotion
(Isa 57:15 NNAS) For thus says the
high and exalted One Who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I
dwell on a high and holy place, And also with the contrite and lowly of
spirit In order to revive the spirit of the lowly And to revive the
heart of the contrite.
Wow!! What a powerful verse. Ever notice that God often
seems to be doing two thing that appear to be opposites? And He
often calls us to do the same? You know like -- "if you want
to be great in His kingdom you have to be the least in the
kingdom"? Well, look at today's verse and rejoice. God,
Who is the high and exalted One (that's powerful); the one Who lives
forever (hallelujah) and whose name is Holy -- dwells in a high and holy
place (if that doesn't bring reverence and awe to your heart I don't
know what will). Then this same high, exalted and holy God Who
dwells in high and holy places also dwells with the contrite and lowly
of spirit individual. Why? So He can revive the spirit of
the lowly and revive the heart of the contrite. Hallelujah.
What god is like our God? He is high and holy yet He is gentle and
caring even to the least of His creatures.
May our prayer today be: "Father, high, exalted and holy God -- You
are worthy of all praise and glory. You alone are excellent.
Father, come into my heart. Come into my spirit and lift me up to
the heavenlies with You. Let me know that while I live on this
earth and in a body that needs redemption -- I also live in heavenly
places with You and Jesus -- and You live in my heart by the Holy
Spirit. Oh, how wonderful and marvelous are Your ways. Thank
You, Father." |

The One Minute Devotion
(1 Cor 8:1 NLT) Now
let's talk about food that has been sacrificed to idols. You think that
everyone should agree with your perfect knowledge. While knowledge
may make us feel important, it is love that really builds up the church.
I had a great discussion today with a fellow believer about the second
half of today's verse. It was our opinion that in many churches
knowledge is the most highly esteemed and much sought after
"spiritual" virtue. For in the mind of many knowledge is
power. But as Paul observes, knowledge often causes us to be
"full of ourselves". When we think we are smarter than
others or think we know more than others we tend to exalt ourselves and
look down on them. This is the exact opposite of true spirituality
which is to humble one's self and consider others as more important than
self. The quest for knowledge has done very little to contribute to
the unity and spirituality of The Church. Instead it has caused more
and more division and lowered Christianity from a intimate spiritual
relationship with God to an impersonal soulical relationship with God.
Which in turn could explain why the world and The Church is in the shape
that it is in today.
May our prayer today be: "Father, I know You want us to have
knowledge; but, You have also said that love was the greatest Christian
virtue. And that our relationship with You is based on faith not
academics. Father, You are the LORD God Almighty. The God Who
wants us to love Him, not merely study Him."

The One Minute Devotion
(Heb 12:10 NIV) Our
fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God
disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.
Why does God want us to "share in His holiness"? Because
holiness is wholeness. It's love, peace and joy. It's
completeness. It's true life. It's life as God lives and
experiences it. So, why does He want us to share in His holiness?
Because it is the best way to live. Actually, I doubt
that God would consider anything outside of holiness as truly living
(experiencing life as He created it). Unfortunately for us, in order
to share in His holiness we will have to be disciplined (corrected).
Just as earthly parents correct us and punish us to teach us how to live;
so, God
corrects us so that we can learn how to live holy lives. God doesn't
want anything less than the best for us. And His holiness is the
best way to live.
May our prayer today be: "Father, help me understand that life as You
intended it to be lived and experience is found in holiness. Help me
to also understand that in order for me to become a partaker of Your
holiness I will have to experience correction. Help me to remember
that whenever You correct me it is always done in love, it is always done
in the right measure
and it is always done for my good."
